Star anise is a evergreen shrub native to Viet Nam and China. It is now cultivated in several Tropical and Subtropical regions, and its crops are mainly dedicated to the extraction of shikimic acid, an active ingredient of the anti-influenza drug. It is commonly integrated in Indian and Chinese cuisines, especially in the famous Garam Massala and the "five-spice" mix.; Its aromatic and star-shape fruit is traditionally used in Asian medicine to treat digestive disturbances. It is a typical remedy for slow digestion and bloating. Tea infusion made from the fruits seem to be helpful to soothe the symptoms of rheumatoid diseases. It is also known as an adjunctive analgesic to reduce spasmodic colitis pain.
